How Mennonites Date (Part 1)

Image
The Holdemans       (Church of God in Christ, Mennonite)   Would you marry a man you only saw twice before in your life, and never even spoke a word to him those two times? How about becoming engaged without ever dating, and then getting married about 2 months after the engagement? Sound risky, frightening, terrifying or ridiculous? Well, we're about to discuss the ways our different Mennonite friends get "hooked", beginning with the Holdeman Mennonites.   Click  here  for the Youtube video.   As I have mentioned before, this Mennonite group is made up of different cultures and ethnicities, and is not part of or was ever a branch of any of the "German" Mennonites in Belize. Anyways, on to our dating. Actually, no form of dating is permitted; it is part of their written doctrine. So how do the young people know who, where, when and how? They believe...

National Agriculture and Trade Show

Image
Photo is for illustrative purposes only    It takes place every year either end of April or beginning of May and is held right at the entrance to Belmopan, next to the junction of the George Price highway and the Hummingbird Highway. It is the country's biggest annual festival and some prominent Mennonite businesses from Spanish Lookout and Blue Creek also have their booths there such as Farmer's Trading Center, Reimer's Feed Mill, etc. Besides being a business expo the show also offers a variety of entertainment, like mechanical rides, rodeo, and motocross competition. Police are on patrol throughout day and night. About 300 feet away the creek joins the Belize River, right beside a shady park and it has a nice swimming place for those wishing to cool off.

Changing a Light Bulb

Image
The following is a satirical article for humorous purposes only How Many Mennonites does it Take to Change a Bulb? EMMC: six. Two to discuss the latest LED lighting techniques, two to discuss the rising cost of electricity, one to hold the ladder and one to screw the bulb. Kleine Gemeinde:  five. Three to talk about the fancy lighting systems other worldly churches have, one to check the wires and one to put in the bulb. Beachy and Conservative:  four. One to place the bulb, one to make sure it is a conservative bulb to lower the cost of electricity, and two to pray about it. Old Colony (Shipyard):  three. One to make sure it's 12 volts, one to check that it is not a "fancy" bulb, and one to screw it in. Other Non-Traditional Mennonites:  all bulbs shine the same, are used the same, and give the same light. Therefore, praise God for that and believe in the wonderful things that will happen after the bulb is put in, no matter how many it took to cha...

Did You Know ?

Image
Did you know that there are 3 main groups of Plautdietsch (Low German) Mennonites in Belize? The Old Colony, Old Order and Kleine Gemeinde and then there's the smaller groups that have been formed as more and more people leave these traditional churches and start their own churches or join existing non-conservative ones.   Did you know that there are 3 other conservative Mennonite groups that are made up of Mestizo (mixed Hispanic-Maya), Maya, Creole and coolies (mixed Creole-East Indian) and are not related to neither were they started by any Plautdietsch Mennonites? That's right, the Holdemans, Beachy Amish and various churches of Conservatives were all started as entirely different and separate from the "German" Mennonites. The Beachy Amish and Conservative Mennonites are often confused with each other due to nearly identical long cape dresses  and white head-coverings on the women, except the Conservative are a little more liberal in both dressing and styl...

Supper Tips from a Mennonite Housewife

Image
Tired from a long day of cleaning and caring for your children and house? 6pm and no idea what to have for supper? No need to despair. With a little bit of creativity, you'll have some tasty supper laid out in no time. 1. Take out some hot dog wieners, pour water over them, pry them apart and soak them in warm or room temperature water for a few minutes. Cut up some sweet peppers, onions, and tomatoes. Saute them in a pan with a bit of oil on high fire, then cut up some wieners and dump them in the pan. Let cook on high for a bit, then add water and tomato sauce or ketchup until wiener pieces are floating in the liquid. Let it simmer for about 5 min. Serve with rice, tortillas or bread. 2. Cut up some wieners and fry them together with scrambled eggs. Get some sliced bread and presto, you have egg sandwiches. 3. Heat up a comal or pancake griddle. Roast the wieners on it. Roll them up in a flour tortilla spread with cheesewiz or mayonaisse and bingo, a hot dog burrito is in ...

Mennonites and the ICJ Dispute

Image
A border disagreement that has been simmering on the back burner finally boiled over a few years ago when a young Guatemalan poacher who had illegally crossed into Belize along the southwest border was killed by Belizean military personnel who were patrolling the forest border. The brand new president of Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, made all sorts of declarations. One thing led to another. Tense moments followed. Unexpected incidents happened at different points along the border. The media in both countries competed against each other to see who could make the loudest headlines. Those tense moments have calmed down somewhat but then politicians and other government people started the ICJ referendum campaign.   Should we let the International Court of Justice decide where the physical and geographical Belize border begins and ends?   The Guatemalan citizens voted a majority of yes last year, even though only a tiny fraction of the entire voting population actually vote...
